Post 20 in this thread on Reasonable Faith. Mostly, this thread discusses various types of music and its quality in terms of the Christian faith.

Weird, the stuff people call music. The likes of Jesus Lover of my Soul, Whispering Hope, Joy to the World, and Silent Night sung in four parts a capella with the acoustics of medieval European cathedrals--now THAT is music like only the angels can sing if you believe in angels. Or well-practiced humans if angels are lacking. To hell with the jarring and hissing of twentieth to twenty-first century banging and beating accompanied by yelling and shouting. It's all of the devil if devils exist. Or of mad humans if devils are lacking.

You see, music is in the ear of the beholder. Mostly, it's what we grow up with and learn to love. That is obvious if one reads this thread with an open mind. People growing up in the sixties love the Beatles, etc. Today's young people love stuff that the older guys insist comes from the devil. I grew up with the music described above and hate all of the twentieth-century stuff--Christian or secular. Admit it, Eric, it's something inside of you--and not inherent in the music--that is the problem.

It belongs to another generation and/or culture than you do in the same way that the stuff you call music belongs to another culture than I do. And the difference is far more pronounced for me than it is for you. If you have any human love in your heart, surely you can see this--if you want to. If you are like my mother used to be, you don't want to and you will continue to insist that only the music that speaks to you is good enough for good people. If my mother is the judge, you most certainly will go to hell because in her judgment the music you consider sacred is definitely the devil's own.
