Post subject:  Why Do Atheists Have to Talk About Atheism?

Why Do Atheists Have to Talk About Atheism? is an article by Greta Christina who tries to answer the question in the title. Some points she makes are:

  • There are real world consequences for anti-atheist bigotry, including imprisonment and death in some parts of the world, and job loss and loss of custody of children in countries like the United States, to name a few.
  • We see religion as a serious social problem that does more harm than good, and that, because of its unfalsifiable nature, does not measure up to reality checks to which other belief systems must measure up.
  • Being close-minded doesn't mean thinking you're right; it means refusing to reconsider your position, even when the evidence suggests that you're wrong.
  • And being intolerant...means refusing to listen to [other people]...dismissing them entirely as stupid or wicked, simply because you disagree with them.
  • We see no reason to treat religion any differently from any other hypothesis about the world.
  • [W]e...think criticizing religion is not only valid, but important.
