For those who find the scientific method difficult to understand or trust, here is a philosophical discussion of The scientific method and affirming the consequent that may be worth looking into. Both Christian and atheist readers respond to the question, and I think (at this point of nine posts) all answers agree. The scientific method is set up in such a way that a hypothesis is assumed to be false until proven true. By thus eliminating all false hypotheses, the hope is to eventually arrive at the most factually accurate hypothesis.
