I have been reading some sources on the connection between fundy religion and authoritarianism. The first is a scholarly work by Bob Altemeyer of the University of Manitoba. His book The Authoritarians is available online. While it concentrates on what is going on in American politics, chapter 4 specifically focuses on religious fundamentalism. (Of course, in today's world much of American politics is mixed up with religion.) There are references made to religion through out the book, so it is well worth the time to read it all. I admit I have two more chapters to go, but didn't want to put off posting info on it until I finished the entire book.http://home.cc.umanitoba.ca/~altemey/

Also, there is a blog I read that often comments on the influence of fundamentalist religion, especially in regards to its influence in the United States. They did a series on authoritarians and fundamentalism, which is where I first learned about the work of Prof. Altemeyer. Very interesting take on what is going on in the US (and perhaps, with fundamentalists in other countries), ways that fundy-authoritarians think, and even ways to help some of them out of their rigid worldview.

Posting the links here for infomation; will start a thread in The Lab for discussion on this topic.

Thesis: the rise of the Religious Right is one of the greatest threats to American civil rights and civil liberties today.
Religion has always exerted great influence in America. The early colonists: the Pilgrims, the Puritans, the Quakers, the Jews, and others have come to this country to avoid religious persecution. Some of these groups, like the Puritans, however, were not tolerant to other religions. This intolerance has continued to this day. The Christian Fundamentalists of the Religious Right, much like the Puritans of the early Colonies, believe that only their idea of whats right and whats not is important. The fundamentalists, then, have launched a crusade to turn America into a Christian empire, and in doing so, went against the ideas of the Founding Fathers, written in the Constitution. This Paper will examine their reasons for doing so, and what exactly do they have in store for America.
