At Capella's Guide to Atheism we see an argument and partial list of biblical references indicating that a flat earth was definitely visualized by the writers of the Bible. Here are a few:

  • (Job 38:13 NIV) that it might take the earth by the edges and shake the wicked out of it?
  • (Psa 93:1 NRSV) … He has established the world; it shall never be moved;
  • (1 Sam 2:8 NRSV) For the pillars of the earth are the Lord’s, and on them he has set the world.
  • (Isa 24:18 NRSV) or the windows of heaven are opened, and the foundations of the earth tremble.

At Tektonics Apologetics. J. P. Holding objects:

A rather common accusation made against the Bible in skeptical circles is that it teaches a view that promulgates a "flat earth" and contains other primitive cosmological/natural data like a solid, domed sky. Here we will have a look at some of the verses commonly used to assert this position...

We will use the KJV as our English cite-source for the most part here, since it is the one most commonly used by skeptics in this arena.

    A Heavenly Stretch

Some descriptions of the sky in the Bible indicate to skeptics that some sort of solid mass is involved. I have dealt with many of these cites in an article written for the Creation Ex Nihilo Technical Journal; let's look at what's left:

The implication is that only the very foolish would take this literally. Holding fails to take into consideration that ancient societies did think of the universe as three-tiered, and that this view of the universe corresponds exactly with that of other peoples living in the same time and place.

Other Problems in Holding

Double-Dealing

Note the live link in the above quote from Holding. If you click on it, you will be taken to an article as promised. In that article you will read:

It is common for sceptics to attack the Bible for teaching a primitive cosmology, including a flat earth and geocentrism. They use these arguments to claim that the Bible cannot be the word of God, rightly pointing out that God would not make errors in his Word. Neither would Jesus, if he were truly God in the flesh, endorse erroneous teaching. However, such sceptical arguments against the Bible’s cosmology have been repeatedly refuted by conservative Christians.[1]

Footnote 1: I analyse the usual ‘proof texts’ found in sceptical websites and show that the sceptics have grossly twisted them, in Holding, J.P., What Shape is the Earth In? An Evaluation of Biblical Cosmology.

If you click on that link, you will be taken back to the article you started with.

In other words, Holding leads the reader in circles from one article from the other without confessing what he is doing. This is not only shoddy scholarship; this is disingenuous. It is hypocritical and insincere--yet he wants to be taken for a True Christian, a sincere representative of the Most High God, Ruler and Creator of the Universe.

Blind-Siding the Audience

Holding quotes Is. 40:22, KJV:

It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in...

Then he asks, "Do these imply a physical dome of some sort?" He replies:

Actually, it is not possible to determine one way or another, for the Hebrews (like many cultures of this time) lacked a word-concept of infinite physical space.

This raises the question: In Isaiah 57:15, KJV, we read:

For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place...

The words "inhabiteth eternity" remind one very strongly of infinite physical. space. I searched both articles and this verse is conspicuously absent from both.

Research on other terms which Holding "explains away" to make scripture fit his theology reveal similar slippery treatment.

Conclusion

People who resort to lies and trickery to make their point should not be trusted to be bearers of Truth, especially when their message does not correspond with all other pieces of available evidence. In any case, we should never be content with one source of evidence when concluding a matter of truth.

Here are a number of verses in the Wisdom/Poetry Literature of the Bible that prove the biblical writers thought the earth was flat. To find them, I used Strong's Concordance with the KJV and following search words:

  • pillar
  • foundation
  • corner

Pillars of the Earth

Job 9:6
Job 26:11
Ps. 75:3

Foundation of the Earth

Job 38:4, 6

Whereupon are the foundations [c] thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof;
c foundations: Heb. sockets

This verse testifies of a flat earth. See the "cornerstone" in there.

Ps. 18:7
Ps. 82:5
Ps. 102:25
Ps. 104:5
Prov. 8:29

Corner of the Earth

Job 38:6
Ps. 118:2

Job 38:6 appears on two lists: foundation and corner.
